The Chap Magazine

It’s 1999. Social media doesn’t exist. There’s a rivalry between Blur and Oasis, Brit-Pop is truly in its prime and lad’s mags flood supermarket shelves. Cue The Chap - a new magazine that’s on the rise and isn’t holding back.

Fast-forward to 2020 and the Lewes-based publication is now renowned as the longest-serving British gentlemen’s magazine, striving to bring back a bit of ‘joie-de-vivre’ to a modern culture that has arguably ‘lost its way’.

I thought let’s start a magazine that offers advice on elegance and modern manners which is light-hearted yet firm in its stand against vulgarity.
— Gustav Temple, founder of The Chap Magazine

With its advocacy of tweed caps, maintained moustaches, hip flasks and well-pressed trousers, The Chap is the antithesis of lad culture. And, it’s not just the surge of Topman Instagram influencers and Peaky Blinders that are responsible for fuelling the craze over the years.

Way back when, the publication launched with perhaps the most charming protests London had ever seen. Bringing its ten-point manifesto to life (which teaches how to be a chap, from maintaining well-groomed facial hair and avoiding sportswear to doffing one’s hat) protests were held across central London, including ‘Civilise The City’ where fifty suited and booted protesters bowed to strangers and helped the elderly cross the road in a march against the ‘vulgarity’ of contemporary society.

Baring placards titled ‘make gloves, not war’ this protest was described by the MET as ‘the most civilized protest ever seen’

Tourists come to London to see men in bowler hats carrying umbrellas, and instead, they get Starbucks.

Since then, the magazine has maintained its readership through its wealth of in-depth interviews with esteemed celebrity favourites, including Stephen Fry, John Malkovich, Peaky Blinders stars themselves, Paul Anderson and Helen McCarthy and many more stars featured in its quarterly issues jam-packed with  satire and style.

Gustav Temple got in touch with Let’s Do Business Finance where he received support to accelerate his business growth. Martin Menezes, Business Manager, was then able to help Gustav access the funds needed to action his plans, futureproof his business as well as expand operations.

Having been declined by his Bankers, Gustav was introduced to me to progress his finance request to help fund growth plans for his business. Not only were we able to provide the required funds, but Gustav received in excess of 12 hours one-one support  with one of our Financial Experts, which helped increase his knowledge of the financial side of his business that has proven to be invaluable to him. For this has not only helped grow and expand the business, but also increase both margins and profitability.
— Martin Menezes, Business Manager, Let's Do Business Finance

With a history of media-frenzied protests and Pimm’s soaked summer events – the Chap’s wealth of success and experience in the industry will undoubtedly continue to influence chaps and chapettes alike as we venture into the new decade.
